“Las viejas solteronas de los Quemados” were born in the Quemados neighborhood in Fuencaliente in 1966, as a group of young people with their initiative, compiled a very old dance called “DANZA DE LAS VIEJAS SOLTERONAS”, and acting for the first time at a carnival party.
The group consisted of two musicians (lute and guitar), and 11 members, dressed in the usual clothing of the time of emigration, since this dance according to data, was done in the old candle dances. Due to the massive emigration of men from our islands to Cuba, Venezuela etc. the women remained single and had to do the chores of the field and the house. It is believed that they did this dance to try to better pass their single status and with a burlesque tone they sang a chorus in which they said:
“Hay ayayay el tiempo se pasa
Hay ayayay sulteras en casa”
Each of them also came out to say a verse referring to their single status.
