SALT PANS OF FUENCALIENTE

Las Salinas de Fuencaliente is a place where tradition and artisan work converge, to generate pure Teneguía Marina Salt. A space of chromatic contrast that exudes magic. A family business that respects nature, supporting themselves from children to grandchildren, they continue with their artisanal work of extraction of sea salt, preserving the same commercial brand Sal Marina Teneguía, in homage to the last eruption of the Island. The Teneguía volcano splashed this story with its ashes, leaving the salt mine construction paralyzed for a year.

Ornithologists, botanists, scientists, have come to look in depth at this landscape, so much so that, in 1994, it was declared a Natural Area of Site of Scientific Interest (LENAC 12/1994, of December 19). The salt flats have been growing since 1967, to its current extension of 35,000 m2, thanks to the support of one of the most important UNESCO Programs in 1994.

The salt pans becomes part of a point of reference within the natural and scenic visits of the Island, converging a historical, cultural, natural, botanical, geological reality… like few others. And the salt shines, not only because of the constant sun and the heat of the young earth, but also after sunset, when the headlights that illuminate the nights south of La Palma wake up.
